How to export your family tree from MyHeritage as a GEDCOM
Short answerTo export from MyHeritage, open the Family tree menu, choose Manage trees, find your tree and click Export to GEDCOM in the Actions column. Choose whether to include photo links, then click Begin the export. MyHeritage prepares the .ged file for download. The file keeps links to photos, not the photos themselves.
Steps
Open Manage trees
Sign in to MyHeritage, hover over or tap the Family tree tab and choose Manage trees.
Choose Export to GEDCOM
Find the tree in the list and click Export to GEDCOM in its Actions column.
Pick the photo option
Choose whether photos and albums should be referenced in the export. Either way the file holds links to the photos, never the image files.
Begin the export
Click Begin the export. When the file is ready, download it and save the .ged file.
Good to know
- The export covers one tree at a time. If you have several trees on MyHeritage, export each one.
- Photo links point to MyHeritage's servers, so they only work while the photos remain there. Download any pictures you want to keep.
- DNA matches, Smart Matches and record matches are not part of a GEDCOM.
Bringing it into Family Trees
In the Family Trees web app, open Import and choose the .ged file. You will see the number of people and couples and the span of years before anything is saved, along with notes about anything the file got wrong. Import it as a new tree, then add portraits and photos. See importing a GEDCOM into Family Trees.
Questions
Does MyHeritage charge to export a GEDCOM?
Exporting is offered from the Manage trees page for your own trees. Check your account if the option is missing, as MyHeritage's menus change from time to time.
Are MyHeritage photos included in the GEDCOM?
No. MyHeritage keeps links to the photos in the file, but the images stay on its servers. Download the photos separately if you want them elsewhere.
Can I export only part of my MyHeritage tree?
The Export to GEDCOM action exports the whole tree. To share a smaller part, export everything and trim it in a desktop program, or start a new tree in Family Trees from the people you need.
