What is a step-grandparent?
Short answerA step-grandparent is either the parent of your stepparent or the spouse or partner of one of your grandparents who isn’t your blood grandparent. If your grandfather remarries after your grandmother dies, his new wife is your step-grandmother. You are her step-grandchild.
Two ways to have a step-grandparent
- Through a stepparent: your stepmother’s mother is your step-grandmother.
- Through a grandparent’s marriage: your grandmother’s second husband is your step-grandfather.
Family Trees names both. It goes further up too: a great-grandparent’s new partner is a step-great-grandparent.
What step-grandparents call you
You are their step-grandchild: step-granddaughter or step-grandson. Further down, a step-great-grandchild.
Let Family Trees name it for you
Every parent link in Family Trees is birth, adoptive, step or foster, and every couple is married, partners, separated or divorced. From that, the app names each relative in plain words on their page and under How are they related?, including half, step, foster and in-law relations. It’s free for up to 100 people.
