When MyHeritage is the better choice

MyHeritage is built for discovery. Its paid plans search historical records and suggest Smart Matches with other members’ trees, and its DNA test finds relatives you may not know. If your goal is to push your tree further back, those tools do things Family Trees does not attempt.

When Family Trees is the better choice

Family Trees keeps the focus on the people you already have. Each relative gets a round portrait, a gallery and a page with their dates and closest family; group photos can be tagged so one wedding picture appears on every guest’s page. You can record a story in the browser and keep the voice with the person, and Moments brings up birthdays and anniversaries as they come round.

Your tree is never compared with anyone else’s. It is private to you and the relatives you invite, who can edit or only view and join for free.

Free plans side by side

MyHeritage’s Basic plan allows up to 250 people in the tree you build on a family site. Family Trees’ Free plan is one tree of up to 100 people, and it includes photos, recorded memories, all five tree views, Moments, sharing and GEDCOM export. Plus ($39.99 a year after a 7-day trial) and Lifetime ($129 once) add unlimited people and trees, GEDCOM import, posters, the family book and the family map.

Moving between them

Export a GEDCOM file from MyHeritage (see exporting from MyHeritage) and import it into Family Trees. Family Trees exports GEDCOM for free on every plan, so you can take your family anywhere.

Questions

Is MyHeritage or Family Trees better for a free family tree?

MyHeritage’s free Basic plan holds more people (up to 250) and connects to its record and matching services. Family Trees’ free plan holds up to 100 people and is built around photos, recorded voices and private sharing with relatives. Pick by what you want the tree to do.

Does Family Trees have Smart Matches?

No. Family Trees never compares your tree with other people’s trees. Your family is visible only to you and the people you invite.

Can I import my MyHeritage tree into Family Trees?

Yes. Export a GEDCOM file from MyHeritage and import it into Family Trees with Plus or Lifetime, which the 7-day trial includes. Photos are not part of GEDCOM, so they are added separately.
