What is an aunt or uncle by marriage?
Short answerAn aunt or uncle by marriage is the husband, wife or partner of your blood aunt or uncle. Your mother’s sister’s husband is your uncle by marriage. Most families just say uncle. The same works in reverse: you are their niece or nephew by marriage.
Who counts
Family Trees adds “by marriage” to the partner of a blood aunt, uncle, great-aunt, niece or nephew, and to those relatives of your own partner: your husband’s aunt is your aunt by marriage too. Further out, it describes the link in two parts, such as your first cousin’s husband.
Is an aunt by marriage family?
Yes, by marriage. You share no blood link through them, so their own relatives aren’t your relatives. Their children with your blood aunt or uncle, though, are your first cousins.
Let Family Trees name it for you
Every parent link in Family Trees is birth, adoptive, step or foster, and every couple is married, partners, separated or divorced. From that, the app names each relative in plain words on their page and under How are they related?, including half, step, foster and in-law relations. It’s free for up to 100 people.
