Short answerA 5-generation pedigree chart traces your direct line back to your sixteen 2nd great-grandparents, 31 people in all, usually born more than a century before you. It is the standard research chart genealogists use. The blank template below is numbered for you, and Family Trees draws the same chart from your data.

The template

Blank 5-generation pedigree chart template: 31 empty boxes for names and years.

Open the file in your browser and print it (choose landscape and “fit to page”), or open it in any app that reads SVG to type into it. Free to print, copy and share.

How to fill it in

  1. Fill what you know first: you, parents, grandparents.
  2. Use the numbers to keep lines straight. Box 16 is your father’s father’s father’s father.
  3. Write approximate dates as “abt. 1890” rather than leaving them out; they still help.
  4. When a line runs out, continue it on a new chart with that person in box 1.

Who it suits

Anyone researching records, swapping notes with relatives, or preparing for a family history trip.
