The family map

The family map places everyone by the places in their story: where they were born, lived, married, moved and died.

Steps

  1. Add places

The map uses the places on people’s pages: Birthplace, Place of death, Place of marriage, and the place of any Lived in or Immigrated event in their Life. Write them as you’d say them, such as Cork, Ireland.

  2. Open the map

Tap + at the top of the Album and choose Family map, or tap the Places card on someone’s page to open it on them. The first time, Family Trees asks before it looks places up with Apple Maps; tap Look Up Places.

  3. Explore

Everyone stands at their places as a round portrait. Where several people share a town, their portraits pile up with a number for how many; tap the pile to see who was there. Tap Born, Lived, Married, Moved or Died at the bottom to show or hide those places.

  4. Follow a life

Tap someone to see the places of their life in order, joined by a line, so a move across the world stands out. Tap Open for their page.

  5. Go back in time

Drag along the decades at the bottom to see where the family lived in any one of them. Go back to All years to see everything again.

Tips

  • To find a place, Family Trees sends only its name (never a person’s name or dates) to Apple Maps. The answer is kept on your device, so each place is looked up once.
  • To stop the lookups, turn off Find places with Apple Maps in Settings, under Family Map. The map then shows only the places already found.
  • If a place lands in the wrong spot, make its name more specific, for example Portland, Maine rather than Portland. Places that couldn’t be found are listed under the map’s heading, with whose they are, so you can put them right.
  • The family map is part of Plus, and the free trial includes it.
