Printing a poster
Turn your tree into a poster worth framing. Family Trees draws the view you choose at print resolution, sized for common poster papers.
Steps
Open the poster studio
On the Tree tab, tap the export button at the top right and choose Poster…. You can also tap Poster under Print on the Share tab, or press ⌘P on iPad or Mac.
Choose what it shows
Under Show, pick Everyone, Ancestors, Descendants or Fan. Everyone is the whole family. For the others, choose who it’s centered on and how many generations. Opened from the Tree tab, the studio starts on the view you were looking at; the Hourglass prints as Everyone.
Choose the paper
Pick 18 × 24 in, 24 × 36 in, A2, A3, Letter or A4, and portrait or landscape. If names would print too small to read, the studio says so and suggests a paper where they read well.
Choose a style and the words
Pick Light, Indigo or Dark. The title starts as your family’s name, or for instance Ancestors of Olivia Bennett, with the years beneath it; change either under Words. Turn off Photos to leave the photos out.
Share, print or save
Tap Share to send the PDF to a print shop, Print to print it with AirPrint, or Save to keep it in Files.
Tips
- Print shops prefer PDF. Posters are drawn at print resolution, so portraits stay sharp even at 24 × 36 inches.
- For a quick image to send or show on a screen, choose Export PNG from the Tree tab’s export button instead.
- A poster carries the date it was made and a small Family Trees mark at its foot. Tree exports carry the mark in one corner.
- Anyone can design a poster and watch it take shape. The print-ready file is part of Plus, and the 7-day free trial includes it.
