How to draw a blended family tree

2 min readUpdated 19 October 2026

Short answerIn a blended family tree, show each couple separately, including earlier and later marriages, and link each child to each parent with the kind of link they really have: birth, adoptive, step or foster. Half-siblings share one parent; step-siblings share none but their parents are partners. Different line styles keep it clear without ranking anyone.

The terms

TermMeaning
Half-siblingShares one parent with you, by birth or adoption.
Step-siblingThe child of your stepparent; you share no parent.
StepparentYour parent’s spouse or partner who isn’t your parent by birth or adoption.
Adoptive parentA legal parent by adoption. In most family trees adoptive links count exactly like birth links.
Foster parentCares for a child without being their legal parent.
Ex-spouse / ex-partnerA former partner, often still the parent of children in the tree.

How to draw it

  • One line per couple. If someone married twice, draw two partner lines, earlier on one side and later on the other, and hang each couple’s children from their own line.
  • Link children to parents, not just to couples. A child brought into a second marriage connects by birth to one partner and as a stepchild to the other.
  • Use line styles for the kind of link: solid for birth and adoption, dashed for step, dotted for foster, with a small legend. Or keep all lines the same if the family prefers.
  • Mark separations and divorces on the partner line, not by removing the person. They are still a parent.

Doing it kindly

A family tree can feel like a judgment about who counts. Ask the people in it how they want to appear. Some adopted people want birth parents shown, some don’t; some stepchildren call a stepparent “Dad”. Accuracy and kindness work together: record the real links, and let the drawing show everyone as family.

Doing this in Family Trees

In Family Trees each parent link can be birth, adoptive, step or foster, and couples can be married, partners, separated or divorced, with more than one union per person. The relationship calculator uses those links, so it will say “half-brother”, “stepmother” or “foster sister” where that is what the link is. See stepfamilies, adoption and fostering.

Questions

What is the difference between a half-sibling and a step-sibling?

A half-sibling shares one parent with you, by birth or adoption. A step-sibling shares no parent with you: they are your stepparent’s child from another relationship.

How do you show a second marriage on a family tree?

Draw the person with two partner lines, one to each spouse, and hang each couple’s children from their own line. Mark the first marriage as divorced or ended rather than removing it.

Are adopted children included in a family tree?

Yes. Adopted children are full members of the family and are usually linked to their adoptive parents just like children by birth. Many trees also record birth parents where the person wants that.
