Complex families: step, adoptive and foster, several partners

2 min readUpdated 30 September 2026

Families are rarely a neat diagram. Family Trees records each relationship as it is, so stepfamilies, adoption, fostering, several partners and single parents all have a proper place.

Steps

  1. Record the kind of parent

When you add a parent (with the Parent quick-add button, or + beside Parents), choose the Kind under Relationship: Biological, Adoptive, Step or Foster.

Siblings you add later share the same kind of link, so a stepfather stays a stepfather to each of his stepchildren.

  2. Add more than one partner

A person can have any number of partners. Add each one with Partner and choose Married, Partners, Divorced or Separated. Their page lists the current partner first.

  3. Give a relationship its dates

On a person’s page, tap the link beside Partners, such as Married 14 Sep 1946, or touch and hold a partner’s photo and choose Edit relationship. Set the Status, the wedding date and Place of marriage, and a divorce date if there is one.

  4. Choose each child’s parents

When you add a child to someone with several partners, pick the right Other parent. Half-siblings then sit under the right couple in the Descendants view.

  5. Single parents

Choose Not listed as the other parent. Nothing looks missing, and you can add the other parent later if you learn who they are.

  6. Let the app name it

Kinship knows a half-brother from a stepsister and a foster sibling from a cousin. Tap anyone on the tree to see how they’re related to the person it centers on, or make a Kinship card on the Share tab.

Tips

  • To undo a link made by mistake, touch and hold the photo on the person’s page and choose Remove as parent or Remove as child. Both people stay in the tree.
  • Remove relationship ends a partnership but keeps both partners, and any children keep both parents.
  • Adding a second parent makes the two parents partners automatically. Open the relationship to change its status or add a date.
  • Anniversaries in Moments come from wedding dates, so give married couples their date.
